This handbook on traffic accident investigation procedures is intended to serve as a reference source for students, educators, and investigators on principles and techniques involved in advanced traffic investigations.
Abstract
Each chapter provides clear definitions of and statements about the topics it contains, with graduated sets of solved problems arranged to present a natural development and understanding of the subject matter. Situations are described that confront investigators who conduct technical or advanced training and investigations. The first chapter provides an introduction to traffic accident investigations. Subsequent chapters consider the actual investigation, vehicle behavior, vehicle placement on the highway, coefficient of friction and drag factor, speed analysis, failure to remain at the scene of an accident, photography, and field measurements and scale diagrams. The final chapter summarizes technical traffic accident investigation formulas and selected derivations. Additional information on investigation procedures is contained in six appendixes.
