To facilitate the identification and comparison of forensic soil samples, a simple mount was constructed to accommodate small samples for use in conjunction with Munsell Soil Color Charts.
Abstract
The mount is constructed of standard photographic mat boards; 1.0-centimeter holes are cut for each sample to be mounted. The 1.0-centimeter sample cell diameter compliments the viewing holes in the soil color charts, while the quantity of soil needed to fill a sample cell is not prohibitive. When extremely small soil samples are recovered for testing, the sample cell can be reduced by preparing cards with smaller diameter holes. The use of clear adhesive lifters allows testers to use different colored backgrounds behind the soil sample card. In this way, colors of certain soil samples can be discriminated between and accurately designated. These soil mounts are attractive and suitable for courtroom presentation. 3 figures and 9 references
