This online toolkit provides instruction in the safe and private use of technology (e.g., cell phone use and Internet use) in the context and under the threat of intimate partner violence (IPV), sexual assault, or other threats of violence against women.
Abstract
Under the topic of "General Technology Safety," the features of a technology safety plan are discussed. The plan encompasses the use of phones, computer, email, instant messaging, and other technologies in a threatening situation. Other general resources provided are tips on privacy and documentation, and a video on how to take a screenshot on a computer or cell phone in documenting harassment or abuse. A section on "Devices & Hardware" addresses how to handle situations in which a perpetrator might use spyware to secretly monitor what a victim does on a computer or handheld device. The toolkit's section on the "Cell Phone" contains a safety plan; phone location and privacy in IPV cases; tips on cell phone safety and privacy; and two videos on how to limit location access on a smart phone and how to put a pass code on a smart phone. The section on "Online Safety & Privacy" focuses on privacy and safety in using the computer; understanding the Internet; privacy when posting content online; people searches and data brokers; safety and privacy on Facebook; images, consent, and abuse; and password safety.
