This volume explains alcohol's effects, the causes of juvenile alcohol use and alcoholism, the problems caused by adolescent alcohol use, the prevention of adolescent alcoholism, and treatment and recovery.
Abstract
The text notes that most teenagers do not understand the concept of alcoholic content, although 40 percent of 10th graders and nearly 20 percent of 8th graders reported having been drunk in 1996. Alcohol has both physical and emotional effects. The social context, peer influences, and, some experts argue, the media contribute to teen drinking. Adolescent alcohol use can negatively affect health, put a strain on relationships with family and friends, and limit success in academics and employment. Adolescent alcohol use also has a major role in juvenile delinquency, adolescent suicide, and auto accidents. Prevention efforts include home, school, and community programs. Treatment includes both outpatient and inpatient options. Photographs, index, glossary, list of suggested readings, appended list of signs of alcohol abuse, and 42 references
