This book offers a first-hand account of work as an investigator for the New York Child Protection Services (CPS) agency.
Abstract
The author describes the pressures he faces on a daily basis and discusses in details all aspects of child abuse investigation. These include interviewing parents accused of abuse, interviewing abused children, finding emergency placements for children in immediate danger, and testifying in court to have children removed from abusive homes. The occupational stress faced by CPS workers is exacerbated by the feeling that they are working alone in a social service system that fails to support them, but is mitigated by the emotional and professional assistance proffered by colleagues.
