Abstract
Information on the operation of the commissioner's staff encompasses employee grievances, internal affairs, legislative liaison, the Office of the General Counsel, and the Public Information Office. Information and data regarding the work of the deputy commissioner's staff pertain to compliance in the areas of accreditation, annual inspections, and internal audit; food services; health services; mental health services; planning and research; program planning; and the operation of the Tennessee Correction Academy. Data and information on administrative services address such operations as the budget procurement contract administration, and management information services. The report's section on "operations" focuses on programs and the operations of adult facilities. The latter encompass classification, sentence management services, community service work crews, education, inmate grievances, inmate jobs, the substance abuse program, security services, volunteer services, and prerelease and transition services. The section on data and statistics focuses on admissions, the incarcerated population, releases, staff directory, and research briefs and publications. Some highlights mentioned in the report are an anticipated reverting of approximately $17.5 million to the State General Fund; the addition of 256 female beds with new construction and 170 beds by double-celling previously single-occupancy cells; a continued pattern of decline in violent incidents; and a 1.1-percent increase in the number of inmates in TDC custody, from 17,565 on June 29, 2001, to 17,757 on June 30, 2002. 43 tables and 3 figures
