Tennessee has enacted legislation that deals with juvenile courts and proceedings, access to juvenile records, criminal investigation, intrastate communication of criminal statistics, the expungement of criminal records, and the release of and access to criminal records.
Abstract
Legislation requires that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (BI) establish and maintain a registry to screen child care providers and that juvenile court records be kept confidential. The BI is divided into two divisions, the criminal investigation division and the forensic services division. The BI is required to establish an intrastate communication system of vital statistics and information relating to crime, criminals, and criminal activity. Legislation also contains provisions on the expungement of criminal records, the release of criminal records, the destruction of criminal records upon dismissal or acquittal, pawnbroker licensing, eligibility for appointment to and membership on the Tennessee State Racing Commission, and licensing of private protective services and private investigators. Additionally, legislation covers duties and responsibilities of the Tennessee Crime Information Center and access to and confidentiality of criminal records.
