This manual contains background information and detailed instructions for use in the protection of laboratory workers from hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HIV transmitted by blood, body fluids, and tissue.

Abstract

The guidelines explain the modes of transmission of HBV and HIV and the survival of HIV in the laboratory. Protection techniques including handwashing, barrier protection, sterilization, disinfection, and decontamination, are explained, as are universal precautions that should be used even without evidence that a patient is infectious. Special precautions for laboratories are also detailed, including measures related to facilities; blood and other specimen collection and handling; the use of analytical instruments and procedures; the disposal of needles and other sharp objects; and the storage, decontamination, and disposal of hazardous waste. Further guidelines cover the management of laboratory accidents, the autopsy, the handling of surgical specimens, and the training and monitoring of personnel.
