TERROR INFLICTED ON JEWISH VICTIMS IN HITLER'S NAZI GERMANY IS EVALUATED, AND THE WILL TO LIVE IS DISCUSSED.
Abstract
THE HOLOCAUST SUFFERED BY THE JEWS WAS DIFFERENT FROM ALL EARLIER MASSACRES IN JEWISH HISTORY BECAUSE OF ITS CONSCIOUS AND EXPLICIT PLANNING, ITS SYSTEMATIC EXECUTION, AND THE ABSENCE OF ANY EMOTIONAL ELEMENT IN THE DECISION TO EXTERMINATE THE JEWS. HOW HITLER OBTAINED THE CONSENT AND COOPERATION OF HIS CLOSES ASSOCIATES, THE COMPLIANCE OF EXECUTIONERS, AND THE RESIGNED ACCEPTANCE OF MANY WHO DID NOT CARE OR WHO WERE UNWILLING TO GET INTO TROUBLE IS DIFFICULT TO COMPREHEND. THE HOLOCAUST WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE RESURGENCE OF PRIMITIVE PAGANISM IN MODERN GUISE. THE STRUGGLE OF THE JEWS TO RESIST TYRANNY AND TO RETAIN THEIR DIGNITY AND INTEGRITY AS HUMAN BEINGS WAS INDICATIVE OF THEIR WILL TO LIVE. THE BATTLE AGAINST TERRORISM MUST BE FOUGHT, IN PART, BY ELIMINATING COMPLACENCY TOWARD PERSONS WHO ARE IN TROUBLE AND PAIN. (DEP)
