AN EXPOSE OF HOMOSEXUAL AND HETEROSEXUAL RAPE IN PRISONS WHICH FOCUSES ON THE FUTILITY OF RESISTANCE IN THE FACE OF TACIT ADMINISTRATIVE SANCTIONS.
Abstract
THE FIRST SECTION PRESENTS CASE HISTORIES AND CONVERSATIONS WITH THE VICTIMS OF PRISON RAPE, BOTH MALE AND FEMALE. IT SHOWS THE TERROR AND HUMILIATION THAT IS PART OF THE NEW AND WEAK PRISONER'S DAILY LIFE. THE NEXT SECTION DEALS WITH THE RAPISTS. INTERVIEWS WITH PRISON RAPISTS ADD FIRST PERSON REALISM TO THE CASE STUDIES. BEHAVIOR PATTERNS OF RAPISTS AND VICTIMS ARE DESCRIBED. THE THIRD SECTION DEALS WITH THE ATTITUDES AND POLICIES OF PRISON ADMINISTRATORS. THE AUTHOR CONTENDS THAT PRISON GUARDS ARE ONE OF THE MAJOR FORCES IN PERPETUATING THESE SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN THAT THEY OFTEN TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE. GUARDS AND ADMINISTRATORS ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO THE PROBLEM BY IGNORING IT. THE LAST SECTION IS DEVOTED TO SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEM, WHICH FOR THE MOST PART REQUIRE SWEEPING CHANGES IN THE ENTIRE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM AND ITS PHILOSOPHY.
