Studies presented in this volume, published between September 1989 and January 1993, reflect trends in terrorism and drug trafficking in the 1990's that involve political, social, and economic developments.
Abstract
Although many political, economic, and military institutions constructed since the collapse of communism and the disintegration of the Soviet Union have been created based on a philosophy of bipolarism, contemporary thinking has not yet adapted to the changed environment. Further, trends in terrorism and drug trafficking reflect global historical changes to a considerable degree. The collapse of communism and the supremacy of western capitalism have stimulated the spread of Islamic fundamentalism. Trends in terrorism and drug trafficking are also affected by immigration and social issues, policing and border control in Europe, and the spread of organized crime. Specific terrorist groups in the Middle East, Germany, Spain, and Northern Ireland are discussed. Consideration is paid to the involvement of organized crime in drug trafficking, government drug control strategies, and legal and judicial procedures for countering terrorism.
