This report reviews 1989 terrorist incidents and suspected incidents in the United States, performs a trend analysis of terrorism in the United States for 1985-89, addresses aspects of terrorism, and considers the current threat to the United States from terrorist domestic and international groups.
Abstract
During 1989, the FBI recorded four terrorist incidents in the United States and 16 suspected terrorist incidents. Each incident is profiled. Prevention efforts and significant accomplishments are also documented; the latter include law enforcement efforts against particular terrorist groups, arrests, indictments, and convictions. The terrorism trend analysis (1985-89) presents statistics by group, target, and type. The number killed and injured in terrorist attacks are also indicated. Issues discussed are terrorist group motivations, Puerto Rican terrorism, narcoterrorism, special- interest terrorism, special-events management, and high-tech terrorism. A threat analysis of domestic groups advises that Puerto Rican terrorism continues to be one of the major concerns in the FBI's counterterrorism efforts. Middle Eastern terrorist groups continue to be the primary international terrorist threat to U.S. citizens abroad. Appended definitions, revisions to 1988 statistics, chronological summary of 1985-89 incidents, and the most frequently used Federal statutes in the fight against terrorism.
