Abstract
A chronological listing of 1987 terrorist incidents is followed by a review of incidents, suspected incidents, successful prevention efforts, and major accomplishments. Trend analysis focuses on the period 1983-87. The analysis focuses on the number of persons killed and injured and the trend by group, target, and type of tactic. Attention is given to Iran as a continuing terrorist threat, Puerto Rican terrorism, and issues associated with extraterritorial jurisdiction in the prosecution of terrorists. The FBI recorded seven terrorist incidents in the United States during 1987. All incidents were committed on a single day, May 25, 1987, at various locations in Puerto Rico. They were attributed to a previously unknown Puerto Rican terrorist group, Guerrilla Forces of Liberation. No deaths or injuries resulted from these terrorist acts. Four acts of terrorism in the United States were prevented in 1987, largely through the FBI's Counterterrorism Program and through cooperation between law enforcement and intelligence agencies. 1 table and 8 figures
