This Department of State report examines terrorist attacks directed against U.S. businesses abroad in 1985. That year, there were 67 terrorist attacks in which 2 American businessmen were killed, 1 wounded, and 9 kidnapped.
Abstract
The costs of this type of terrorism are high in terms of lives lost, property damage, random payments, security costs, and negative effects on productivity and efficiency. Globally, the United States loses jobs, foreign exchange, and constructive links with other countries. Regional patterns of terrorism directed against international business are outlined for Latin America, with an emphasis on Colombia, Peru, and Chile; Western Europe, particularly Belgium, Spain, Greece, and West Germany; the Middle East; and Asia and Africa. Counterterrorism strategies can be implemented at the corporate level and with Government assistance. The report concludes that enhanced security and awareness and increased Government-business cooperation are essential for effective counterterrorism planning. 4 figures, 1 table, and 3 appendixes
