ABSTRACTS OF RESEARCH PROJECTS, PLANNING STUDIES, AND INMATE PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS ARE PRESENTED, ALONG WITH SUMMARIES OF ACTIVITIES OF BRANCHES OF THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT UNIT.
Abstract
THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT DIVISION OF THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS CONSISTS OF FOUR BRANCHES: THE RESEARCH BRANCH; THE DEVELOPMENT BRANCH, WHICH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR NEW INMATE PROGRAMS; THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT BRANCH, WHICH PERFORMS EVALUATIONS AND PROVIDES COMPUTER SUPPORT; AND THE PLANNING BRANCH, WHICH PROVIDES MANAGEMENT ASSISTANCE. IN ADDITION, THERE IS AN INMATE JOB MANAGEMENT PROJECT TEAM THAT PROVIDES DATA ON INMATE JOB SKILLS AND ASSISTS IN JOB-PLACEMENT ASSIGNMENTS. THE TRANSITIONAL AID RESEARCH PROJECT IS CONDUCTING FOLLOWUP STUDIES TO DETERMINE THE IMPACT OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND JOB TRAINING ON RECIDIVISM. ABSTRACTS OF THE RESEARCH BRANCH PROJECTS COVER BALLISTIC STUDIES, SURVEYS OF MEDICAL SERVICES IN TEXAS CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS, BUDGET STUDIES, RESEARCH ON DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF INMATES, STUDIES ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COMMUNITY-BASED CORRECTIONS, DESCRIPTIONS OF VARIOUS ADMINISTRATIVE PROGRAMS, A STUDY OF PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES, AND REPORTS ON CRIME TRENDS. THE INMATE PROGRAMS MOSTLY RELATE TO VOCATIONAL TRAINING AND PRACTICAL WORK EXPERIENCE. DRUG REHABILITATION PROGRAMS, SECURITY MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS, AND PRERELEASE PROGRAMS ARE ALSO REPRESENTED. THE PLANNING STUDIES FOCUS ON JAIL OPERATIONS AND LAND ACQUISITIONS FOR CORRECTIONAL USE. APPENDIXES LIST COOPERATING AGENCIES, UNIVERSITIES, CITIES, AND COUNTIES FOR WHICH TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE REPORTS HAVE BEEN PREPARED. (GLR)
