This report presents information about the nature and extent of juvenile delinquency in Texas in 1992, as well as the response of the juvenile probation system.
Abstract
Police agencies arrested 136,416 juveniles between ages 10 and 17. Among these, 37,196 were warned and released, handled in magistrate courts, or diverted. The other 99,219 were referred to juvenile probation departments. Another 9,939 juveniles were referred by social service agencies, parents, schools, the Texas Youth Commission, and others. The total represented a 3-percent increase from the previous year, with the 6,238 delinquent conduct referrals representing an 8-percent increase from the previous year. A total of 1,424 juvenile probation officers in 160 departments covered the State's 254 counties. Juvenile probation departments disposed of 47,972 referrals by counseling and releasing, diverting to other agencies for treatment, or dismissing the complaints. The departments initiated 36,456 voluntary or other temporary supervisions under guidelines of their juvenile boards. Figures, tables, and map
