This report provides an update on the status of the illegal drug situation in Texas, and reviews the progress of the Texas Narcotics Control Program.
Abstract
The report discusses the nature and extent of the drug problem in Texas and indicates that the drug trafficking problem in Texas continues to expand. Also discussed is the progress made in identifying the causes of the drug problem, new trends in drug use, and directing the attention of State, local and Federal officials to it. Specifically, the report cites national statistics which show that 58 percent of high school seniors used illicit drugs in 1986. Statistics also indicate that 15-to 24-year-olds are the only age group with an increased death rate from drug-related accidents, suicides, and overdoses in the past 10 years. Other topics discussed include the correlation between drug abuse and crime, the financial drain the illegal drug problem causes on state health, social service and law enforcement agencies, and the potency of the drugs sold on the streets.
