IT IS ARGUED THAT THEORIES OF PUNISHMENT ARE MERELY RATIONALIZATIONS WHICH UNDERLIE SOCIETY'S CENTRAL REACTION TO DEVIANCE - THE REMOVAL AND SEGREGATION OF 'DIFFERENT' INDIVIDUALS INTO A SITUATION OF CONFINEMENT.
Abstract
THESE RATIONALIZATIONS ARE SAID TO BE BASED ON THEORIES OF UTILITARIAN SCIENTIFIC, THERAPEUTIC, ADMINISTRATIVE, AND HUMANITARIAN-RETRIBUTIVE SOLUTIONS TO CRIME CONTROL. THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES, HOWEVER, THAT REGARDLESS OF THE CLAIMS OF ANY OF THESE THEORIES, THE CENTRAL CONCERN OF SOCIETY HAS REMAINED THE REMOVAL AND SEGREGATION OF THE CRIMINAL. AN UNDERSTANDING OF THIS GOAL IS SAID TO BE IMPLICIT IN EACH OF THE ABOVE SOLUTIONS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
