Abstract
THIS STUDY ADDRESSES TWO MAJOR PROBLEMS. ONE MAY BE CALLED THE COMPETITIVE EXPLANATION ORIENTATION TO THEORIZING ABOUT RIOTS. THE SECOND PROBLEM IS METHODOLOGICAL AND ASKS THE QUESTION-CAN ABSTRACT VERBAL THEORIZING BE INTERWOVEN WITH AND MADE TO CONSTITUTE A HEURISTIC BASIS FOR MORE FORMAL MODELING ACTIVITIES.
