This study by document examiners in Wisconsin's State Crime Laboratory System illustrated certain inconsistencies when using thin-layer chromatography (TLC) to analyze writing inks.
Abstract
Document examiners ran numerous TLC plates in preliminary work to establish a TLC standard ink library, and they compared chromatograms to gage the reproducibility of results. Because several deviations from the expected occurred, quality control procedures were developed. These procedures were developed to ensure proper solvent selection, TLC plate selection, and photographic recording of TLC plates. Implementing quality control procedures enabled document examiners to achieve reliable results from observations of more than 100 chromatograms of writing inks. 9 references, 1 table, and 2 figures
