HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL MOVEMENT, SOCIAL WELFARE POLICIES FOR JUVENILES, AND PAST ATTITUDES TOWARDS JUVENILE DELINQUENCY.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR BEGINS BY EXAMINING DELINQUENCY IN THE PRE-INDUSTRIAL ANGLO-AMERICAN WORLD. HE FOCUSES ATTENTION ON SPECIAL INSTITUTIONS, SUCH AS HOUSES OF REFUGE IN THE EARLY NINETEENTH CENTURY AND THE SUBSEQUENT DEVELOPMENT OF PREVENTIVE PHILANTHROPIC SOCIETIES AND PUBLIC REFORM-SCHOOL SYSTEMS. TWO CHAPTERS ARE DEVOTED TO THE SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS WHICH MODIFIED IDEAS OF THE CAUSES OF DELINQUENCY IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. THE STUDY CONCLUDES WITH ANALYSES OF THE JUVENILE COURT AND THE RESEARCH OF PSYCHIATRISTS AND SOCIAL SCIENTISTS DURING THE EARLY DECADES OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
