OFFICERS FROM THE PROBATION SERVICE IN ENGLAND NOW DO CASEWORK IN PENAL INSTITUTIONS AS PRISON WELFARE OFFICERS.
Abstract
THROUGH-CARE SERVICES ARE NOW PROVIDED IN ENGLAND IN RESPONSE TO THE REALIZATION THAT AFTER-CARE SHOULD START AT THE MOMENT WHEN THE OFFENDER IS SENTENCED, EVEN EARLIER. UNDER THIS SYSTEM AN 'OUTSIDE' PROBATION OFFICER HANDLES THE PRISONER'S FAMILY WHILE THE PRISON WELFARE OFFICER WORKS WITH THE PERSON IN DETENTION, WITH BOTH WORKERS COLLABORATING. THIS SYSTEM HAS BEEN CREDITED WITH ELIMINATING MUCH OF THE DISTRUST THAT ARISES BETWEEN HUSBAND AND WIFE WHEN ONE IS SENT TO PRISON. THE PROGRAM HAS ALSO HELPED TO FOSTER A MORE POSITIVE ATTITUDE TOWARDS VOLUNTEERS. THE SERVICE IS PLANNING TO PROVIDE NON-RESIDENTIAL TRAINING CENTERS WHICH WILL HELP INMATES WITH THEIR HANDICAPS AND PROBLEMS AND TEACH WOMEN DOMESTIC SKILLS AND SOCIAL APTITUDES. FOUR CASE STUDIES ARE PRESENTED TO DEMONSTRATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THIS NEW APPROACH.
