This Guide to Indian Country, authored by a noted historian and member of the Jicarilla Apache Nation of New Mexico, contains information on 562 tribes in 33 States, exploring the history and modern-day life of the tribes, including details about land status, history and culture, economy, community, and government, as well as contact information for each tribe.
Abstract
Every Indian reservation in the United States is profiled by State. Wherever possible, this guide has relied on information provided by the Indian Tribes regarding their land holdings; their culture and history; and their economic infrastructure and enterprises. The section on location and land status situates each reservation geographically within the State. In the section on culture and history, every effort has been made to enable Tribes to provide their own information regarding these aspects of their Tribal profiles. Information addresses broad ethnohistories, historic linguistic groupings, and historic geographic ranges of the Tribes occupying the current reservation. The section on government describes the method by which the Tribe currently governs itself, its territory, and others within the Tribal jurisdiction. In the section on economy, each reservation's economy is described, including information on agricultural, forestry, livestock, mineral and mining, industrial, manufacturing, and recreational activity. Sections on infrastructure and community facilities describe transportation, utility, and delivery services available to each reservation. Included are descriptions of community facilities such as governmental facilities; public meeting facilities; health care facilities; and emergency, industrial, recreational, and housing facilities. State maps are provided to show the general locations of the Indian reservations and communities. Extensive photographs, approximately 450 bibliographic listings, a subject index, and an accompanying CD
