This document presents results from a survey on the time taken between stages of proceedings for defendants in completed criminal cases in magistrates’ courts in England and Wales.
Abstract
The results are from the June 2002 Time Intervals Survey. Information on adult indictable cases is collected in one week of each quarter. Information on adult summary offenses is additionally collected in the first and third quarters. Information on youth defendants in both indictable and summary cases is collected in four weeks of each quarter. Information is collected on all criminal cases involving persistent young offenders completed since the previous survey. Results show that, in indictable cases, there was a reduction in delay from offense to completion. The average time from offense to completion fell from 113 days in June 2001 to 109 days in June 2002. There was a reduction in delay from first listing to completion. The average time from first listing to completion fell to 54 days from 55 days while the average time from charge or laying of information to first listing remained at 8 days. The average time from offense to charge or laying of information fell to 47 days from 50 days. There was a reduction in Youth Court delay. The average time from offense to completion for defendants in indictable cases in Youth Courts fell to 86 days from 90 days. There was a reduction in delay in indictable cases for youth defendants. The average time from offense to completion in indictable cases fell to 86 days from 89 days. There was an increase in all criminal cases and summary cases. The average time from offense to completion for youth defendants in all criminal cases rose to 88 days from 87 days. For youth defendants in summary non-motoring and summary motoring cases, there were increases in delay at every stage of proceedings. 6 tables, 5 figures, 13 notes
