This bulletin presents the results of the March 2002 Time Intervals Survey for England and Wales, which obtained data on the time between stages of proceedings for defendants in completed criminal cases in magistrates' courts.
Abstract
The survey found that the average time from offense to completion of case processing for all defendants increased to 142 days in March 2002 from 139 days in March 2001. For indictable cases, the average time from offense to case completion increased slightly from 112 days in March 2001 to 113 days in March 2002. For indictable cases, 27 percent of defendants' cases were completed at first listing in both March 2002 and March 2001. The average number and average length of adjournments for indictable cases remained unchanged from March 2001 (2.2 adjournments and 26 days, respectively). The average time from charge or laying of information to first listing for defendants in summary non-motoring cases decreased to 31 days in March 2002 from 32 days in March 2001. The average time from charge or laying of information to first listing for defendants in summary motoring cases remained unchanged from March 2001 (38 days). The average time from offense to completion of case processing for all defendants in youth courts declined to 89 days in March 2002 from 98 days in March 2001. 6 figures and 11 tables
