This bulletin presents data on the time intervals for each stage between offense and completion for cases heard in magistrates' courts in England and Wales in February 1994.
Abstract
Time intervals are shown in number of days for the following stages: offense to charge or summons, charge or summons to first listing, first listing to completion, and offense to completion. Findings show that the average time between first listing and completion for indictable cases in February 1994 was 62 days, 2 days longer than in February 1993. The average time to process indictable cases through the magistrates' court was 130 days, 5 days more than in February 1993. Twenty-one percent of the cases were completed at first appearance, the same percentage as in February 1993. Both the average number and the average length of adjournments remained at the same level as February 1993, 2.4 adjournments and 25 days respectively. A table shows the average number of days for each stage for each of the years 1988 through 1993. The same data are shown for February, June, and October for each of the years 1988 through 1993. Similar data are provided for adjournments for indictable offenses. 2 tables and 2 figures
