Abstract
The survey is one of three conducted in February, June, and October each year that collect information on indictable cases. The survey reports that in February 1996 the average time from date of offense to completion of indictable cases at magistrates' courts was 134 days. This compares with 132 days in February 1995. The average time from offense to charge or summons increased to 46 days in February 1996 from 43 days in February 1995. The average time from charge or summons to first listing also increased to 28 days from 25 days the previous year. The average time from first listing to completion was 60 days in February 1996, down from 64 days in February 1995. The average number of adjournments per case remained unchanged at 2.6 in February 1996 from the same period the previous year. The average length of adjournments, however, fell to 23 days from 25 days in February 1995.
