REPORT ON A STUDY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TIME AND CAREER PHASE IN PRISON AND PRISONIZATION, USING EVIDENCE TAKEN FROM A LARGER STUDY OF 22 PRISONS FOR MEN IN FIVE DIFFERENT COUNTRIES.
Abstract
A TOTAL OF 1310 INMATES FROM 7 PRISONS IN THE UNITED STATES, 8 IN MEXICO, 2 IN ENGLAND, 2 IN SPAIN, AND 3 IN GERMANY RESPONDED TO QUESTIONNAIRES DESIGNED TO ELICIT THEIR ATTITUDES TOWARD AND RESPONSES TO IMPRISONMENT AND PRISON. THE FINDINGS INDICATE THAT ONLY CERTAIN PRISONS CONFORM TO THE TRADITIONAL VIEWS THAT PRISONIZATION INCREASES WITH TIME SERVED AND THAT PRISONIZATION IS GREATEST IN THE MIDDLE STAGES OF PRISON SENTENCES. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PRISONIZATION AND TIME SERVED ARE AFFECTED BY INDIVIDUAL BACKGROUND CHARACTERISTICS AND THE PRISON IN WHICH THE SENTENCE IS BEING SERVED....EB
