Annotation

This report describes the characteristics of approximately 3,650 individuals released from Maryland's Division of Corrections (DOC) in terms of race, sex, age at admission to DOC, sentence length, and major convicting offense.

Abstract

Of the 3,594 individuals for whom race data were available, approximately two-thirds were black and one-third were white. The vast majority (92.9 percent) were male, and only 255 releasees (7.1 percent) were female. At the time of their admission to the DOC, over one-half of the releasees were aged 24 or under; only 227 offenders (6.2 percent) were aged 40 or older at admission. Additionally, the releasees had received incarcerative sentences for over 130 different major offenses and had been sentenced to terms of imprisonment ranging from less than 6 months to more than 15 years. Over 20 tables and four appendixes are included.
