The experiences of coordinating a training program, establishing rapport with officers, and gaining access to channels of effective communication may be the most challenging aspect of implementing a successful family crisis intervention training program for the Washington, DC Police Department.
Abstract
Communication is needed between officers and staff and between coordinators and personnel of other agencies. Both written and verbal communication techniques are needed and it must be a two-way open systems approach. Coordinators must listen constantly and be willing to be flexible to the needs of the program and all persons involved, including both ride-alongs for training staff during officers' tour of duty and verbal and written officer program evaluations and recommendations. Public relations is important in sustaining the program and communicating its goals to the community.
