This "tip sheet" from the National Mass Violence Victimization Resource Center offers 12 tips for individuals and groups that plan to donate money to help individuals and communities victimized by a mass violence incident (MVI).

Abstract

One tip advises potential donors to ensure that the organization receiving the money is reputable and precise on how the funds will be distributed, what fees are deducted, the length of time before the funds are distributed to victims, how long before the funds reach victims, and the portion of the funds given directly to victims or victim services. Other tips are to donate directly to the victimized city's One Fund to bypass administration fees; consider donating to the National Compassion Fund, which gives all donations directly to victims; volunteer time through the city's designated agency; give money instead of gifts; and beware of scammers soliciting through social media or by phone. The tip sheet lists four agencies/organizations that can provide reliable information on donations for a particular MVI.
