This manual aims to prepare traffic accident investigators and analysts to determine whether or not a tire contributed to a vehicle accident.
Abstract
The manual aims to serve both as a reference manual during investigations and as a training document for use in police training schools that teach tire failure examinations. The introduction emphasizes the need for investigators and analysts to meet the high standard of performance and expertise expected of them. The manual covers tire manufacturing, markings and identification; tire and wheel nomenclatures; tire load and speed ratings; tire-roadway behavior; investigations at the scene; and evidence recognition, collection, and interpretation. The discussion emphasizes the recognition, interpretation, and collection of evidence at the scene, as well as the importance that investigators recognize their limitations and when they should refer the tire to an expert for a detailed examination and failure analysis, generally in a laboratory setting. Each chapter presents graduated commentary and extensive diagrams and photographs to provide a natural development and understanding of the topics covered. Checklists, figures, tables, photographs, appended glossary and tire examination form, and index
