Written primarily for crime investigators, this book details techniques for making tire imprint identification.
Abstract
The first five chapters provide basic information about tires useful for tire imprint examiners. This information covers tire nomenclature, design, manufacturing, functioning, and how they are sold. Details on tire print identification begin with activities at the crime scene. These include isolation and protection of the scene, methods of recording tire impression evidence, tire imprints, photographs, the admissibility of photographic evidence, and the crime scene drawing. A separate chapter covers the recording of tire imprints. This includes a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of photographs versus castings, the making of castings and photographs, and the management of such evidence. Other topics discussed are wheelbase and tire tread stance measurements, a tire imprint identification system, imprint evidence without a suspect's vehicle, test tire impressions, tire noise treatments, tire tread drawings, the value of having a suspect's tire, and traffic accident investigation. Also discussed are preparation for trial, obtaining a consultant, and tire imprint identification training. Glossary, subject index, illustrations, 28 references.
