This article discusses the mission and function of the European Traffic Police Network.
Abstract
The traffic police forces of Europe established the Traffic Information System Police (TISPOL) -- more commonly known as the European Traffic Police Network -- in an effort to improve enforcement of traffic laws and reduce the accident casualty rate. The founders hoped to do this by: (1) continuing the exchange of ideas and collection of information on road safety methodologies, policies, and techniques used in member nations; (2) initiating and supporting research on road safety; (3) providing an informed police opinion on road safety issues; (4) serving as a transfer point for best practices throughout Europe; (5) organizing and coordinating multinational operative campaigns; and (6) exchanging information to assist investigative processes. Organizers of TISPOL plan to establish a database that will be international, digital, and multilingual. Projects undertaken by TISPOL may fall into one or more of the following categories: enforcement, education, engineering, environment, legislation, technology, and information. TISPOL includes subgroups concerned with drink/drugs driving and commercial vehicle enforcement.
