The results of a study of the numbers of findings and dispositions, modes of disposition, and amounts of judgments for tort cases in 38 large urban trial courts during one month in 1988 are presented.
Abstract
Using information from the 38 courts of the Trial Court Information Network for a 1-month period, the study determined the number and rate at which tort cases were filed, the casetype composition of those filings, the method by which the cases were resolved, and the amount awarded for cases that found for the plaintiff. In addition to producing an overall profile, the study addressed some specific questions such as the typical award for different types of tort cases and what type of tort case is most likely to be decided by a judge rather than a jury. Each of the aspects determined are discussed with tables to illustrate the information gathered. 1 highlighted box, 13 figures, and 21 notes
