This report, the first part of a 3-year effort to assist the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to develop and implement community-wide systems of training youth workers on a national basis, presents initial findings from interviews with over 95 organizations that specialize in delivering training to youth workers.
Abstract
The respondents did not include government agencies or national organizations that offer training to their affiliate members. The interviews were conducted in order to compile an overview of trainers and to collect concrete information for a directory of training organizations. The report describes the wide variety of organizations involved in training youth workers, their methods of operation, the variations in cost of such training programs, the level of staff targeted for training, and specific areas of expertise offered by these organizations. When asked what the most pressing needs of youth workers were, the training organizations identified several broad categories: fundamental information, practical strategies, organizational skills, and skills to influence family and community systems.
