This book presents the report and recommendations of a 3-day seminar held in Finland in October and November 1983 to discuss the situation and needs of crime victims.
Abstract
The 40 participants came at the invitation of the Helsinki Institute for Crime Prevention and Control, affiliated with the United Nations. Participants noted the growing interest in victims' needs and the awareness that organizations outside the criminal justice system as well as the system itself could assist victims. Recent developments inside and outside the criminal justice system were listed. The group recommended support for the movement to aid victims, together with evaluation of the effects of various measures. Recommendations included greater awareness of victims' needs, added crime prevention efforts, provision of both material and nonmaterial support to victims, and governmental efforts to protect victims' rights and secure recovery of damages. Appendixes list the conference participants and agenda, present 15 papers, and present four committee reports.
