This text aims to provide a guide for traffic law enforcement responsibilities to assist the beginning traffic and patrol officer and also to serve as a text for use in traffic courses offered in colleges.
Abstract
The first chapter presents an overview of traffic laws and traffic law enforcement, including vehicle codes, moving traffic violations, equipment violations, issuing citations versus warnings, the quota system, the department of motor vehicles, the point system, and ticket fixing. Additional chapters detail issues and procedures related to different types of vehicle stops, police pursuit driving, enforcement of laws relating to driving under the influence of alcohol, and traffic point control. Further chapters explain traffic accident investigation, investigation of hit-and-run accidents, equipment and investigative techniques for traffic homicides, and testifying in courts. The final chapter discusses the traffic division of a police agency, the motor officer, accident investigation vehicles, the use of helicopters, non-sworn parking enforcement personnel, school crossing guards, civilian accident investigators, and selective traffic law enforcement.
