Successful traffic safety initiatives based on the core components of traffic law enforcement, education, and engineering can have many positive results that can benefit a community; the International Association of Chiefs of Police has developed a document presenting 59 strategies for highway safety.
Abstract
The first benefit from an effective program is a reduction in vehicle crashes and the impacts that range from fatalities to minor property damage. Another benefit is the detection and deterrence of crime. Many criminal offenders drive badly; therefore, traffic stops for offenses such as passing a red traffic signal have apprehended many wanted persons. Finally, a safe and efficient transportation system is crucial to a community’s overall well-being. Unsafe or inefficient roadways cause problems that include traffic delays that cause aggressive driving and the impact on economic development. A document developed by a subcommittee of the International Association of Chiefs of Police Highway Safety Committee presents 59 strategies in the areas of management, human resources, and technology. The document includes a list of public and private resource organizations that may be able to assist a police agency with matters from technical support to grant and program funding. Updates as required will enable the document to remain an effective aid in strategic planning and a reminder of the importance of traffic safety to the mission of the police agency and the community it serves.
