Abstract
An introductory overview explains that training is the central element in the success of community policing, particularly in relation to police attitudes. Important skills that proactive police agencies encourage in their officers include problem solving, community relations, and collaboration and that new recruits, existing staff, and citizens all benefit from policing. Other articles discuss the role of a citizens’ police academy in helping community members understand the role of police officer, the role of diversity in improving organization decision making and effectiveness, and specific factors important to successful diversity training. Additional articles focus on ways to create a high-performing police organization, ethics training, personnel selection strategies to address behavioral indicators of appropriate and inappropriate conduct, and the qualities of effective police supervisors.
