This article describes a range of law enforcement training aids, such as protective suits and simulated weapons.
Abstract
Proper law enforcement training gear is essential to safe and effective officer training. Beginning with protective suits, the author describes numerous types of training gear. Four types of protective suits are reviewed: the new Redman XP suit, Fist’s #333 Police Training Suit, Fist’s #200-S Stun Weapon Training Cartridge and Simunitions Suit, and Taser International’s simulation cartridge suit. A variety of simulated weapons are described, including Taser’s Simulation Air Cartridges that fire non-conductive nylon wire leaders and shortened barbs and Shocknife’s training knife that uses electricity to fool the skin into believing it has been cut. Less-lethal chemical weapons made with inert versions of sprays and powders are discussed, such as PepperBall’s inert ammo filled with baby powder. Several different types of dummies are described, one of which was designed to train officers on proper arrest and control techniques. Another dummy, manufactured by the OK Fine Productions company, is designed to withstand a wide range of tactical practice maneuvers from cuffing to throws. Finally, the author notes that a variety of unusual training aids can be found in Crown Gym Mats’ Nottaline products, which offers realistic looking foam furniture and objects such as bricks, bottles, and laptop computers.
