THIS REPORT PRESENTS THE OBJECTIVES AND SYLLABI OF SEVEN TRAINING COURSES IN CRIMINOLOGY GIVEN BY THE INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY AND FORENSIC SCIENCE (ICFS) UNDER THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA.
Abstract
A SPECIALIZED TRAINING INSTITUTE IS BETTER POSITIONED TO ORGANIZE INSERVICE TRAINING PROGRAMS THAN A UNIVERSITY. ICFS USES A CORE FACULTY AND GUEST FACULTY CONSISTING OF SPECIALISTS FROM ADMINISTRATION, MEDIA, PUBLIC LIFE, AND UNIVERSITIES. THE ADVANCED COURSE IN CRIMINOLOGY AIMS FOR ITS PARTICIPANTS TO UNDERSTAND LAW AND JUSTICE ASSUMPTIONS, DELINEATE THEORIES RELATING TO CRIME CAUSATION, ANALYZE STRATEGIES TO DEAL EFFECTIVELY WITH OFFENDERS, DISCUSS THE HANDLING OF MODERN LIVING PROBLEMS, AND FACILITATE INTERACTION AMONG DIFFERENT SECTORS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. TWO COURSES IN RESEARCH METHODOLOGY HIGHLIGHT THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SCIENTIFIC POLICE RESEARCH, IDENTIFY AND EVALUATE RESEARCH PROBLEMS, ANALYZE RESEARCH METHODS, AND FURTHER DEVELOP THE FACILITY FOR RESEARCH ON POLICE PROBLEMS. THE OBJECTIVES OF BEHAVIORAL ORIENTATION ARE THE FAMILIARIZATION WITH HUMAN NATURE; SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT; GROUP BEHAVIOR; TECHNIQUES OF INFLUENCING GROUP OPINIONS AND ATTITUDES; THE CHANGING RESPONSIBILITIES OF POLICE; AND THE POLICE ROLE AS AGENT FOR ECONOMIC, POLITICAL, AND SOCIAL CHANGE. THE POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS COURSE FAMILIARIZES STUDENTS WITH CHANGES IN THE SOCIOPOLITICAL ENVIRONMENT, THE POLICE ROLE IN SOCIETY, A COORDINATED APPROACH TO SOCIAL PROBLEMS, AND WAYS TO PROMOTE POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS. A POLICE COURSE ON JUVENILE DELINQUENCY COVERS JUVENILE DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR, JUVENILE LEGISLATION, PREVENTIVE MEASURES, CORRECTIONAL TECHNIQUES, AND THE ROLE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE AGENCIES. FINALLY, THE METHODOLOGY OF BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION COURSE DEAL WITH CRIMINAL TENDENCIES OF YOUTH, TECHNIQUES OF BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION, AND WAYS TO ACCELERATE INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION. FIELD VISITS ARE LISTED FOR THESE COURSES. (JLF)
