RECRUITS AND VETERAN OFFICERS ARE TAUGHT WHEN TO USE THEIR WEAPONS BY LIFE-LIKE SIMULATIONS ON FILM OF SITUATIONS THAT OCCUR ON THE STREET.
Abstract
THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT USES SHORT FILMED EPISODES TO TEACH ITS MEN HOW TO REACT CORRECTLY, AND AS AUTOMATICALLY, AS POSSIBLE. THE OFFICER STANDS 15 FEET FROM THE SCREEN AND SEES THE SITUATIONS IN THE SAME CONTEXT AND PHYSICAL PROPORTIONS THEY WOULD HAVE ON THE STREET. HE CAN FIRE BLANKS INTO THE PAPER SCREEN. THE FILM CAN BE STOPPED TO PINPOINT THE IMPACT OF HIS BULLET OR TO ILLUSTRATE OTHER ISSUES.
