Several national, State, regional, and local law enforcement training institutions offer innovative training programs that range from hands-on physical skills courses to criminal investigation and management courses.
Abstract
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Academy at Quantico, Virginia, has an 11-week course that deals with leadership and management. The FBI also offers many other courses, the most popular ones dealing with violence in the United States, stress management in law enforcement, interviewing and interrogation techniques, and the relationship between mass media and the police. In addition, the FBI provides investigative, managerial, and administrative training at State and local police training facilities. The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia, is one of the largest providers of law enforcement training in the United States, serving more than 73 Federal organizations. The FLETC is developing several new training programs, including Small Town and Rural (STAR) programs designed to combat the flow and scale of illegal drugs. More traditional training programs under development at FLETC include rifle instructor, international financial fraud, international computer crime, and advanced driver instructor training. The Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM) in Jacksonville, Florida, offers approximately 75 courses of study. The IPTM conducts onsite programs in more than 40 States, Canada, and abroad. IPTM course offerings are borken down into six specialty areas: accident investigation, drugs and alcohol, management and supervision, criminal investigation, microcomputers, and specialty training. Other police training facilities in Kentucky, Texas, and Illinois are described in terms of courses offered.
