A conference was convened by the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in 1953 to look at the educational and training needs of court and institutional personnel who work directly with juvenile delinquents.
Abstract
The conference was organized in four parts, the first of which focused on the role of social workers in educating and training personel for work with juvenile delinquents. Participants considered problems affecting educational programs, goals for social work education, and the incorporation of juvenile delinquency in the social work curriculum. Part two of the conference looked at the training of juvenile court probation officers and related workers. Participants identified the kind of training needed for these personnel and examined recruiting standards, the proper use of probation officers, staff development, and organization for training at the State level. The third part of the conference discussed training for houseparents and associated personnel in institutions for juvenile delinquents, while the fourth part considered ways of meeting the needs of court and institutional workers who treat juvenile delinquents. A list of conference participants is appended. Footnotes
