This presentation discusses the development and implementation of legal interpreter education programs in New Jersey at both undergraduate and graduate levels under the auspices of the Department of Higher Education's Legal Interpretation Project.
Abstract
The final goal of the program involves a graduate program, whereas immediate goals include the training needs of current, practicing court interpreters and the development of future professional legal interpreters. The immediate goals were met by development of courses for bilingual, practicing interpreters covering linguistic skills and legal vocabulary. An undergraduate program or a pre-professional minor in interpretation and continuing education were then developed by the New Jersey Consortium of Educators in Legal Interpretations and Translation (NJ-CELIT). Some of the initial courses (only in Spanish) are offered at Jersey City State College and William Paterson Colleges. The future of the graduate program is dependent on bills currently pending in the New Jersey Legislature. 4 notes
