USE OF TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS (T.A.) TO IMPROVE THE INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS AMONG STAFF MEMBERS AND THEIR EFFECTIVENESS IN DEALING WITH THE JUVENILE INMATES.
Abstract
T.A. THEORY DESCRIBES EVERY INDIVIDUAL AS HAVING THREE PERSONS, OR EGO-STATES, WITHIN HIMSELF-A PARENT, AN ADULT, AND A CHILD. IN T.A. THERAPY THE CLIENT'S GOAL IS TO GET A CLEARER UNDERSTANDING OF HIS THREE EGO STATES. HE LEARNS TO SHUT OFF HIS OWN INTERNAL DESTRUCTIVE FORCES - THE CRITICAL PARENT, TO GAIN A MORE ACCURATE PICTURE OF HIMSELF AS A PERSON - THE ADULT, AND TO LEARN THAT HE CAN BE HAPPY WITHOUT HARMING HIMSELF AND OTHERS THE CHILD. AS THE INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPS AN AWARENESS, SPONTANEITY, AND A CAPACITY FOR INTIMACY, HE NO LONGER NEEDS DELINQUENT ACTS TO MAINTAIN A LOPSIDED EQUILIBRIUM, AND HE IS MORE LIKELY TO BECOME A PRODUCTIVE MEMBER OF SOCIETY. T.A. THERAPY IS DESCRIBED AS IT IS BEING USED AT THE O.H. CLOSE SCHOOL, A CORRECTIONAL FACILITY OF THE CALIFORNIA YOUTH AUTHORITY. IT WAS DECIDED THAT THE SCHOOL WOULD INSTITUTE A TRAINING AND TREATMENT PROGRAM FOR MEMBERS OF THE STAFF. THIS REPORT CONTAINS A DESCRIPTION OF THE TRAINING AND THE REACTION OF THE STAFF TO ITS USE.
