This article examines various measures taken through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) via Federal mandates and cooperative efforts with agencies and organizations to develop and implement transportation and port security technologies and strengthen the ports and transportation system of the United States.
Abstract
Technology is known to offer tremendous benefits in defending the Nation’s land and sea borders. Today, there are initiatives being undertaken by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in cooperation with other Federal and private agencies and organizations to develop and implement technological advancements in both transportation and port security. This article discusses many of these, as well as the financial impact in funding these Federal security mandates. Several initiatives discussed include: (1) the adoption of a standardized western hemisphere identity card; (2) improvements in radio frequency identification devices (RFID); (3) intelligent, integrated wired and wireless, end-to-end networking solutions; and (4) satellite images of ports and harbors.
