A review of the literature on the effectiveness of treatment programs for males who physically abuse their partners and data from six pilot projects funded by the Correctional Service of Canada suggested the desirability of trying similar programs with prison inmates.
Abstract
The analysis suggested that consciousness-raising strategies can be used to motivate incarcerated men to change, whereas coercion might be used with men who are the most at risk of committing acts of domestic assault. The destructive impact of violence on victims indicates that these programs should aim for the elimination of all forms of violence, although a high rate of recidivism is likely to occur among the prison clientele. The proposed model makes treatment part of a combined approach that also includes surveillance, return to prison when necessary, and the availability of victim services. Further evaluations of the pilot programs and the development of other specialized programs will permit comparisons that will improve understanding of factors associated with rehabilitation and the specific factors important to intervention related to spouse abuse. 43 references
