The Federal medical center being opened by the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 1996 in Butner, N.C. will provide a full range of medical and surgical services and psychiatric care.
Abstract
The center is being built adjacent to an 800-bed men's Federal correctional institution, a 296-bed minimum-security camp, and a new 992-bed women's correctional institution. The center will have seven psychiatric units, with mental health treatment ranging from acute care provided in closed units to intermediate are provided in open male and female units. The center combines the requirements of both a major medical center and a prison. Therefore, security is a foremost consideration. Staff and inmates need to be secure, but a variety of evaluative and treatment programs require frequent movement and interaction. The center will be a prototype both for new Bureau of Prisons medical buildings and for psychiatric services. It will serve as a learning tool for providing inmate health care in a safe, humane environment in a cost-effective manner. Photograph
